Many kinds of mystics

Not all mystics are the same. There are many types, including Christian mystics, Buddhist mystics, Jewish mystics and Sufi mystics. Some would never use the term ‘mystic’ in describing themselves.

All mystics are biased according to their predispositions. Some are conservative, some are progressive. Some put belief over experience, while others place experience over belief. Some meditate to achieve the stillness, while others meditate within the stillness. Some sit still, while others travel. Some are able to visit deep realms, and others are able to visit even deeper realms.

The Five Practices

Most of the everyday practitioners that I’ve met — particularly those I’ve met through their blogging and writing — seemed to have discovered the web and then abandoned it. They originally soared in with high hopes and enthusiasm, spent some time blogging, and then nearly inevitably slipped away into obscurity, anonymity or quiet practices or perhaps various forms of service.

Along the way, I’ve observed their practices, as well as mine. And while not a single one of us would ever tell you that our practices are the practices, I think that collectively we have some things worth sharing.
